Compassion

Artist: Albert Anker

As I've shared with you before, I think, Buechner is one of my favorite writers:

Compassion is sometimes the fatal capacity for feeling what it is like to live inside somebody else's skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too.

--Frederick Buechner

  1. I have tears as I read this quote and ponder the artwork.

Here is another great quote on compassion I just found at http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com/practices/features.php?id=19472

And on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, humankind will have discovered fire." -- Teilhard de Chardin

  2. Oops.I forgot to paste the quote! Here it is:

Compassion literally means to feel with, to suffer with. Everyone is capable of compassion, and yet everyone tends to avoid it because it's uncomfortable. And the avoidance produces psychic numbing — resistance to experiencing our pain for the world and other beings.
    — Joanna Macy quoted in Open Mind by Diane Mariechild

  3. Hello, John. Thank you so much for stopping by. Both the quotes you offer are really good. I especially like Macy's observation that the avoidance of compassion produces psychic numbing. So very true.

Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one!
